INSULATION PRODUCTS

• Fiberglass insulation: The most commonly specified type of insulation, fiberglass is available in batts and rolls – with or without backing – and loose fill for use in a variety of applications.
• Mineral wool insulation: Also known as stone wool, slag wool or by the trade names Rockwool and Thermafiber, mineral wool insulation is made from molten stone, minerals, steel slag and other additives, and spun into a dense batt. Available in batts, it provides excellent insulating properties, with a higher R value per inch than fiberglass. It resists moisture and has the side benefit of excellent sound dampening properties for use in acoustically sensitive settings. Stone wool also has the highest melting point of all the common insulating materials—making it appropriate for fire-rated applications. It also typically contains a significantly higher percentage of recycled content than other insulation types.
• Foam board: There are a variety of foam type insulations, including expanded polystyrene or EPS; extruded polystyrene, or XPS; and polyisocyanurate, or polyiso. All have high R values, providing a high ratio of insulating capability to thickness, making them useful where space is limited.
• EPS foam board: This is typically the lowest-cost option and comes unfaced, so it doesn’t provide a moisture barrier. It has the lowest R value per inch of the various foam board materials.
• XPS foam board: Often known by its color (pink board, green board or blue board) – has a higher R value per inch and is a leading type of insulation in residential construction.
• Polyisocyanurate: Sometimes polyiso insulation, has the highest R value of the foam board types, and due to its production method, always comes with a facing.
